As mentioned earlier, Fred Thompson's now-almost-a-campaign held a conference call with supporters today starting at 4 p.m. It's just concluded.

Mr. Thompson will announce that he is officially a candidate for president on Thursday, September 6, by webcast. That announcement will be followed by the filing of papers with the Federal Election Commission.

The announcement also will be followed by a "grassroots tour" of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. There will be a follow up tour, September 13-15, starting in Florida and ending up back in Tennessee.

More details on the call after the jump...

Mr. Enwright began by thanking the supporters on the line for all their hard work for — and encouragement of — the senator over the last few months.

Then it was time for the big moment: "I am very excited to tell you today that that next step is that next Thursday, on September 6, Fred Thompson will officially become a candidate for president of the United States."

Mr. Enwright then moved on to trumpeting the acquisition of some key staff over the last few weeks: campaign manager Bill Lacy, deputy to the campaign manager Mary Ann Carter, and communications director Todd Harris.

"We are ready for this move. It has taken us a while as you all know," Mr. Enwright said. "But we think it is now time to move forward."

"His formal announcement will be by webcast, next Thursday, September 6," Mr. Enwright said. "This will take advantage of his outstanding ability to take his message directly to the voters."

Again, that announcement will be followed by the filing of FEC papers, and then by a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, followed, the next week, by a tour of Florida ending up back in Tennessee.

"We think we enter this campaign in a very strong position," Mr. Enwright said. "We're consistently No. 2 in the polls, with the closest thing to a draft of a candidate in recent presidential campaign history."

"Our overall objective is to position the senator as the mainstream conservative in this race. ... We appreciate your patience."

At this point, Mr. Lacy came on the line for a bit and talked about his experience running Mr. Thompson's 1994 senate campaign. Mr. Lacy quickly turned things back over to Mr. Enwright, who brought the call to a close.
