Ahead of Fred Thompson's announcement tonight on Leno and shortly after midnight via Internet, a few rather nasty problems with the right are popping up:
1) The Arlington Group: As Jim Geraghty reports here, Mr. Thompson seems to be having trouble with this influential group of social conservatives.
2) Fox and Drudge: As Jonathan Martin reports here, both conservative news outlets have been giving Mr. Thompson a hard time in recent weeks. Fox's Carl Cameron was the one who pointed out Mr. Thompson's Gucci loafers at a state fair. Drudge has been highlighting Mr. Thompson's decision to snub New Hampshire in favor of Jay Leno.
3) Also (and I think this deserves its own category, even though it dovetails with No. 2), the departure of Jim Mills is having reverberations inside Thompson land. Mr. Mills was hired away from Fox News back in mid-July by Senator Thompson himself, though he was only able to join the Thompson team for real at the tail end of August. Mr. Mills' departure, as new communications director Todd Harris has been brought in, is seen as a part of the new campaign manager, Bill Lacy, bringing in his own team and getting things under control at the turbulent campaign. Still, the dispatch with which he was ... well, dispatched ... is being seen as disconcerting. Mr. Mills gave up a lot to join the Thompson effort; and, in the end, the senator didn't even give him the boot personally. Poor form. And it's got other people on staff angry.
