A Gallup poll taken Friday and Saturday, after Fred Thompson's announcement, shows a very modest bump for the former Tennessee senator. Meanwhile, John McCain shows the biggest improvement, and Mitt Romney shows the biggest dip (change from August 13-16 in parentheses):
Giuliani: 34% (+2) Thompson: 22% (+3) McCain: 15% (+4) Romney: 10% (-4)
Mr. Thompson, Gallup says, still faces a name-recognition deficit — meaning he has room to grow. Among Republicans familiar with all candidates, Messrs. Thompson and Giuliani are essentially tied. In a head-to-head race, though, Mr. Giuliani bests Mr. Thompson by 13 points.
Oh, and by the way, 26% of Republicans still say they want another candidate in the race.
On the Democratic side, says Gallup: "New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton continues to lead the field, at 45%, over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, at 24%. Former North Carolina senator John Edwards is third at 16%, up 3 points since August."
