Over the last two years, I may have written a few times about the emerging "purple mountains" — that is, the interior West becoming a political battleground as it becomes less solidly Republican and more open to Democratic advances.
There are a number of reasons behind this shift, including Hispanic immigration, the out-migration of Californians into the region, the relative paucity of Evangelical Christians in the region compared to other regions of the country, and the Republicans' decreasing appeal to libertarian-minded voters.
Now, we learn that Nevada Republicans no longer hold a registration advantage in that state, for the first time since 1992. The Democrats now hold the advantage. And it's likely to grow. As this Las Vegas Sun story explains, the attention Democrats are paying to their Nevada caucus is building the party in significant ways as the GOP is left behind.
