The Thompson campaign is saying this morning that it has raised more than $8 million in the 3rd quarter (its first) — that is, for July, August, and September.
By way of comparison, the 1st quarter numbers of his three main rivals were: Mitt Romney, $21.2M; Rudy Giuliani, $16.6M; John McCain, $13M.
Adding in Mr. Thompson's fundraising from June, that puts his total haul so far between $11-12 million. This is definitely less than impressive, and it puts lie to the idea that there was a huge untapped fundraising stream out there that would start gushing when Fred the Savior got into the race. The Thompson campaign is scrapping for money and media attention. That doesn't mean Mr. Thompson can't win, but it does mean he puts on his pants one leg at a time, contrary to the claims of some of his supporters.
