GOP frontrunner Rudy Giuliani once again* is the frontrunner in the cash chase:
Giuliani: $10.5 million ($16 million cash on hand) Romney: $10 million raised, plus $8.5 million of his own money ($9 million cash on hand) Thompson: $9.3 million ($7 million cash on hand)** McCain: $6 million ($3.6 million cash on hand and $1.5 million in debt) Paul: $5 million ($5.3 million cash on hand)
Of course, there's little appreciable difference in the Giuliani and Romney takes this quarter, but it's remarkable that almost all of Mr. Romney's cash on hand at this point comes from his own bank account. He's burnt a tremendous amount of money pumping ads and direct mail into the early state, most of that media going unchallenged until recently. Mr. Romney can certainly afford to spend the money, but his early state leads may turn out to be fairly delicate once his opponents really open fire.
Mr. McCain's number is pretty darn low — he only barely missed coming in below Ron Paul. (Though, in fairness, this is much more a testament to how impressive Mr. Paul's numbers have been on this front.)
* CORRECTION: The original version of this post mistakenly said that this was the first quarter in which Mr. Giuliani lead the cash chase; he also led the cash chase in the second quarter.
** UPDATE: Numbers updated after official Thompson campaign release.
