When Senator Brownback of Kansas endorsed Senator McCain exactly a month ago, he passed over his ideological soul mate, Michael Huckabee. In the weeks since, Mr. Huckabee has surged in the polls and into a virtual tie for the lead in Iowa, where Mr. McCain is languishing.
So, does Mr. Brownback regret his choice? Not yet, he says.
"I'm still comfortable with the decision that I made, but I am glad that Mike Huckabee is doing well," Mr. Brownback told The New York Sun in a phone interview.
He said that his endorsement came down to Messrs. McCain and Huckabee, contrary to reports that he was considering Mayor Giuliani. He said at the time that Mr. McCain was the consistent conservative best equipped to defeat Senator Clinton in a general election.
Mr. Brownback had campaigned on his rock-solid consevative record on social issues, much like Mr. Huckabee, but his bid never gained traction and suffered when the former Arkansas governor topped him at the Iowa straw poll in August.
"He's played the game plan that I hoped to play — much better," Mr. Brownback said. "He's moving the ball forward and doing a great job out there."
