Rep. Charles Rangel of Harlem voiced (feigned?) surprise this morning when reporters asked him about his being added to the roster of convention speakers this afternoon. "I have? Really?" He said he had "no idea" what he was going to talk about.
"I didn't even know I was added," he said before the state delegation's breakfast this morning. Mr. Rangel, the dean of the state's congressional delegation and a backer of Senator Clinton during the primary, has consistently played down reports that he and his aides were miffed that he was not initially given a speaking slot at the convention. At the same time, he said the only time he has spoken to Mr. Obama has been about legislation in Congress, and not about politics or the election. Mr. Rangel, who will speak briefly around 6 p.m. Eastern, stuck to the party line when asked what President Clinton needed to say in his speech to the convention tomorrow night. "It's all unity, unity, unity," he said.
