The dean of the New York congressional delegation, Rep. Charles Rangel of Harlem, has been quietly added to the convention speakers roster, according to a schedule released by party officials.
Mr. Rangel will address the convention this afternoon shortly before 7 p.m. Eastern, as part of a group of members of the congressional black caucus. Mr. Rangel, a loyal supporter of Senator Clinton during the protracted Democratic primary battle, had not initially been slated to speak, an omission that raised eyebrows and reportedly rankled his allies. A former chairman of the congressional black caucus, Mr. Rangel now heads the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. He will speak alongside Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick of Michigan, John Conyers of Michigan, and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi. His speaking slot is right after Governor Paterson and before a memorial tribute, likely to the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio.
