Governor Paterson may be legally blind, but that didn't stop Democratic convention officials from running the teleprompter during his speech this afternoon. Mr. Paterson can only read when holding written pages extremely close to his face, and he generally memorizes his speeches. He departed on a few occasions from the prepared text handed to reporters, but none of his revisions deviated from the broader Democratic message. He made one slip-up toward the end of his remarks, inserting Senator Obama's name into a line intended to criticize Senator McCain. "Barack Obama will bring us the same broken promises for four more years," he said before correcting himself. The teleprompter, a large television monitor directly in front of the speaker's podium, ran through his remarks, which lasted just under five minutes.
