The Emmy Award nominees for News & Documentary were announced today, with lots of nods to Katrina and the war in Iraq. Of note is the list of programs that turned up under the category "Outstanding Cultural and Artistic Programming." PBS rules with three nominations: "The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo," The Independent Lens feature "A Lion's Trail," about the Zulu singer Solomon Linda who wrote the melody used in the pop hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" but died peniliess, and the P.O.V. feature "Hardwood," about former Harlem Globetrotter Mel Davis.
The networks weren't entirely shut out. The highly respectable CBS News Sunday Morning program earned a nomination with "Soulsville U.S.A.: The American Museum of Soul Music." But I'm puzzled over the last nominee: a Barbara Walters special titled "Heaven: Where is it? How Do We Get There?," produced by ABC News. It got me thinking, I hope they don't have television in heaven.
