IMG_0110web.jpg Opera stars at the Pierre Sunday night for the Opera News Awards. An under-recognized strength of the Metropolitan Opera is the Metropolitan Opera Guild. Its volunteers lead tours of the opera house, and its publication, Opera News, keeps people all over the world informed about the world of opera. At a guild gala on Sunday, maestro James Levine said the guild's activities demonstrate "the way the inner life of this art form is in phenomenal shape." Read more in the column and see photos here. I also have a brief report about some intriguing women vintners in Napa Valley who recently came to New York to pour their favorites. Happy opera listening and wine-drinking.
