SKIRTS AND STOMPS Flamenco dancer Pilar Rioja performs for her 29th season at Repertorio Español, a 40-year-old theater and dance company based in New York that was founded to promote new Spanish and Latin-American art. Ms. Rioja, born in Torreón, Mexico, to Spanish parents, studied with flamenco masters Regla Ortega and El Estampío, and bolero-style dancer Angel Pericet. Considered a bailerina, or dancer who has mastered several art forms, she also runs her own dance academy in Mexico City. ISLAND PARADISE The 41st annual West Indian-American Day Carnival brings Caribbean cultural activities to Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway, offering island cuisines, a Labor Day parade, and performances of reggae, steel drumming, and calypso. A steel-band competition takes place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, with last year's winners, the Pan Sonatas, defending their championship from percussion groups Harmony, Crossfire, and the Sesame Flyers. The Carnival Parade on Monday includes more than 70 floats. All concerts are held at the Brooklyn Museum Grounds. Friday, noon-4 p.m.. TUG TEAM The Working Harbor Committee hosts the Great North River Tugboat Race and Competition. A parade of tugs, accompanied by fireboats, chugs down the river from Pier 84 to the starting line at the 79th Street Boat Basin at 10 a.m. The race begins at 10:30 a.m., and is followed by competitions such as bow-to-bow pushing, which is also known as nose-to-nose — a shoving contest, only with boats. An awards ceremony takes place at 1 p.m. Viewers can also watch from aboard a Circle Line vessel, departing from Pier 83 at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., best viewing is from Pier 84, West 44th Street at the Hudson River, free; Circle Line, boarding begins at 9 a.m., Pier 83, West 43rd Street at Hudson River Park, $35 general, $30 for seniors, children, and members. MUSIC
KARMIC RHYTHMS The Jazz Gallery hosts the Vijay Iyer Special Quintet, led by Mr. Iyer, a jazz pianist and composer who draws upon his Indian background to fuse traditional jazz with rhythms reminiscent of popular South Asian music. He performs a percussion-heavy program with drummer Marcus Gilmore, trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire, guitarist Prasanna, and bassist Stephan Crump. BOSS OF NOVA Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade sings bossa nova classics at Birdland. The singer performs favorites such as "Embraceable You," which she recorded on her 1993 album of the same name, and "Rio," from her 1991 album "Bossa Nova." Ms. Andrade also has deep musical roots in samba jazz. She performs two sets with drummer Helio Schiavo, pianist Dario Eskenazi, and bassist Kip Reed. WELCOME HOME, CAPTAIN Vibraphonist Teddy Charles performs with his quintet at the Iridium Jazz Club. Mr. Charles is known for his skill on the vibraphone, an instrument similar to a xylophone, as well as for his collaborations with Charles Mingus and pianist Hall Overton, who produced the 1956 album "A Word From Bird." He returns to the jazz scene after several decades spent as a charter sailing captain in the Caribbean. MELODIES AFLOAT Bargemusic marks its 30th anniversary with "Here and Now," a music festival spanning Labor Day weekend. All the pieces in the program were commissioned for the occasion and feature a waterside theme, including composer Behzad Ranjbaran's "Fountains of Fin," for flute, violin, and cello, and Daniel Ott's "Blue Water," for violin, piano, and string quartet. The concert is performed by the Dick Hyman Piano Trio and the Voxare Quartet, among others. WHAT A CIRCUS "Désir," a performance that combines gymnastics, ballet, and circus tricks, shows under Spiegeltent's big top at South Street Seaport. Directed by Wayne Harrison, "Désir," which revolves around the theme of seduction, features a cast of contortionists, singers, and dancers who take the stage as courtesans, maharajahs, and soldiers. WAYWARD WONDERLAND The flamboyant performer Joey Arias, known for his feathered headdresses, evening gowns, and elaborate eye makeup, performs in "Arias With a Twist," a fantastical show created by Basil Twist. The evening features a spectacle of singing, tricks, and props — including a large rotating wedding cake. Mr. Arias returns to the New York performance-art scene after five years as the host of Cirque du Soleil's "Zumanity" in Las Vegas.
