Let's Go Out Tonight: Four on the Wall — July 24, 2008

By CHARLOTTE COWLES | July 24, 2008

GALLERY-GOING

INTIMATE GATHERING "Four Summer," an exhibit of new works by a quartet of photographers, kicks off with an opening reception at the Bonni Benrubi Gallery. Sip wine while chatting with the artists, Lindy Smith, Pamela Hanson, Jeffrey Milstein, and Peter Jones, each of whom has taken a singularly different approach to conveying intimacy through the camera lens.

Ms. Smith develops her images of flora via a 19th-century technique that involves using the plants as negatives, so that the subjects of her images become directly involved in the printing process. Ms. Hanson's works document her involvement in the fashion world, and eclipse the untouchable glamour of her subjects with more personal, behind-the-scenes views of fashion shoots. The underbellies of planes in the few moments just after takeoff are the subject of Mr. Milstein's studies, while Mr. Jones takes pictures of his house in Little Compton, R.I. The show is on view through September 20. 6-8 p.m., Bonni Benrubi Gallery, 41 E. 57th St., 13th floor, at Madison Avenue, 212-888-6007, free.
