What To Wear to the Office During and After Pregnancy
Our suggestions on maternity work clothes prompted a variety of questions. This week, we will tackle a number of them.
Dear Jordan:
I'm heading back to work next week after being home with my baby for two wonderful months, and I just realized that none of my work wear will fit, as I'm still not down to my original weight. I am determined to shed these extra pounds and don't want to invest in a new wardrobe, especially since my body is changing weekly, and getting closer to "normal" every day. What do you recommend?

Dear Colleen:
Like most new mothers who work outside of the home, you probably feel that your maternity leave didn't give you nearly enough time with your new arrival, or to slim down to your prepregnancy weight (or size or shape) either. As you mention, your body is in a state in which it is constantly changing, and this will continue. To make it through this period with minimal investment, revisit the clothes you wore during your fourth and fifth months of pregnancy, such as non-maternity apparel one size larger, which is probably suitable for your post-pregnancy period as well. We're talking about black stretch pants and oversize knit tops.
If what you have is out of season, consider purchasing a few outfits with draping characteristics that can go with the flow of your changing body and still look good, such as the apparel sold by specialty retailer Chico's.
Dear Jordan:
My office is planning a summer bash at a lake, which will include picnicking, sunbathing, and water sports. By that time, I will be in my seventh month of pregnancy. Is it appropriate to wear a bathing suit in front of my colleagues during such an advanced state of pregnancy, or should I just decline that part of the festivities?

Dear Marla:
The only variable here is your own comfort level. We are long past the age when women covered up their growing tummies and hid inside.
Also, there is a wide range of maternity swimwear available, from bikinis to one-pieces, and everything in between. My favorite maternity bathing suit is a variation on the tankini: a two-piece whose bottom completely covers the belly, a more comfortable alternative to a one-piece.
Dear Jordan:
To maintain my professional appearance during pregnancy, I've purchased a number of maternity suits, and they are serving me well, but my feet and ankles now are swelling, making high heels extremely painful. What is the best alternative?

Dear Carmella:
If you're talking about a suit jacket and skirt, I would go for a low-heeled loafer or sling-backs (check out Aerosoles for some great new styles). If its a suit jacket and pants combo, then your options are greater, including flat-or low-heeled loafers, boots, and oxfords.
Ultimately, your priority should be eliminating or reducing pain. In most situations, even if you have to wear sneakers to accomplish this goal, everyone will understand. At the very least, they will know better than to aggravate a pregnant woman by pointing out her wardrobe incongruities.
