A Classicist's Works and Days

I have respect for Mr. Hanson, but for his starting out writing an article with an outlook as he did in working the land is incongruous with the lofty thoughts of the philosopher denotes his lack of education completely as well as inspiration from God.
One only has to look at the anals of the Roman Republic and it's Senators to find they seeded the greatest sense of purpose in life which grew in the American soul of Washington serving his nation and returning to the country gentleman as a mark of how ex presidents should be seen and not heard.
Thomas Jefferson mused that he should have been happy to have grown vegetables and fruits for his community as the highest form of tranquility and understanding.
Theodore Roosevelt extolled the virtues of the strenuous life on his Dakota ranch. All of the greatest men of history were wise gentlemen who understood that virtue in understanding life only came from being attached to the life and death struggle of the land and only then could one ever gain an understanding of God and have in their soul invoked His Spirit the pure poetry of life.
That struggle which makes men men and women women is lost on far too many citizens of the world in knowing purpose comes from a relationship with the land and completion comes with the growing of a relationship with God.
It is something I am pleased Mr. Hanson has finally stumbled upon, but perhaps his life should have been invested in trying to mirror George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and someone he probably remembers in Ronald Reagan in his words and left the Greek to the Greeks...because apparently it was all Greek to him.
