Boston and New Haven, not New York, are by far the most pedestrian friendly cities in the country. They are more modeled after Europe, with a large central plaza, careful planning based around landmarks, and they can be traversed on foot inside of 30 minutes - just like Florence or the center of Rome. Chicago is even more pedestrian friendly. New York is ugly sprawl, albeit high density sprawl, but sprawl nonetheless. There is no real center. You hit the nail on the head about LA, but New York is definitely not the be all and end all - New York is a large financial center, yes, but not necessarily as important as you seem to think, especially from an architectural standpoint.
