The biggest outside force influencing the Iraqi situation is the US, which is an illegal occupier that invaded and triggered a massive onslaught of violence in the country on a scale many magnitudes over anything Saddam ever perpetrated.

As with Vietnam, the reason the US is still in Iraq is that too many people are making too much money. Given the motivation and the long history of US / military Intelligence working with / funding / creating Al Qaeda, it would appear that "AQI" is nothing but an intelligence operation designed to make it appear the US is fighting Al Qaeda rather than occupying someone else's country on behalf of oil companies.

Americans have this figured out now despite relentless propaganda articles such as this one.
