Spitting on Veterans

Submitted by Art Durante, Feb 6, 2007 11:36

I wasn't a returning Vietnam vet, but I was an ROTC student at Colorado State University from 1967 to 1972. By 1969, the animostiy towards our soldiers had begun to manifest itself in direct attacks against those of us in ROTC who were stubborn (or foolish) enough to continue to wear our uniforms to our other classes on the one day a week we wore them to ROTC instruction.

I was spit on, kicked, pushed and berated and verbally assaulted almost every day I wore my uniform on campus, as were many of my fellow cadets. I was told by an instructor that if I continued to wear my uniform to class, that she would give me an "F"...I did, and she did.

We were under standing orders from the ROTC department not to respond to provocations with violence, at the risk of being removed from the cadet program and not being commissioned. It was a hard thing to swallow, day after day.

Now, 35 years later, after a career in the military, I still remember being called a baby killer.
