Earlier generations of Ivy Leaguers turned out in droves to volunteer for our country's wars without regard to whether a Republican or Democrat occupied the White House. What changed? Has our culture replaced service to country and to others with service to self? Wasn't that the most offensive aspect of the recent words spoken by John Kerry whether he intended them or not? We may have over-emphasized the rights of citizenship over the past 60 years at the expense of the responsibilities of citizenship. We may have over-valued intellect over the past 60 years at the expense of virtue.
