The dirty little secret of American politics is that first
people have to like you. Despite their failings, both
Reagan and Clinton did well because they came
across as people who enjoyed life, and maybe
even had a life beyond politics. I never agreed
with Clinton's policies, but I liked him. Senator Clinton
will fail because she is unable to show passion with
warmth and approachability. And despite all of
this talk of her being a "centerist" she is not; she is
a dyed-in-the-wool liberal pretending to be a moderate.
The United States, thank god, is not New York. And
the crucible that is a presidential campaign will reveal
all of the shortcomigs she posseses as a candidate
and as a legislator. Mark Warner might want to
think again.
