I've spent 19 years as an AFSCME activist-before that I was an anti union retail worker. I've been through the captive aduience meetings the one on one fear sessions, and the lies told by employers to prevent unionization. The problem with the current system is that it takes sooo long to get to election that mgmt. can really lean on workers, even going so far as to fire members of the owners family to keep the union out (fieldcrest did that one). If a union can walk in with more than 66% of the members saying clearly in writing on the card-yes I ewant a union in my work place, and yes I will either pay dues or a representation fee the deal should be done.
