My dad is a 70 year old, Ivy League educated, Manhattan based MD (specialist) at the top of his field, has his own private practice, and is probably the hardest working and most educated person I know. He loves the practice of medicine deeply (I'm not just saying that -- he really does). He made $68,000 last year. He is unbelievably frugal, and hasn't taken a vacation in years. He can barely afford to live in the NY suburb where his house is.
I work about 1/4 the amount he does and I make about 3 times as much as he does. He's vastly better educated than I am (I partied far too hard when I was younger), and he works much harder than I do. He is extremely well respected in his field, has published numerous papers and is a wonderful doctor.
Meanwhile, his friends who are bankers and real estate professionals are making tens of millions a year. Why on earth would anyone want to be a doctor today?
The problem with the medical industry is socialism, plain and simple.
Like socialism anywhere, it doesn't work.
