Mr. Batchelor, I would have thought you wouldn't have made the mistake of conflating Chappaqua with America. Many of the Dems who won election to the House last night did so by running to the right of their Republican opponents. Can Hillary do the same in 2008; and if so, can she persuade the electorate that her newfound "moderation" or "centrism" (or whatever one chooses to call it) is authentic? I doubt it--mainly because (to return to my original point) Chappaqua isn't America. Moreover, we will have had 20 years when the president's name was either Bush or Clinton; if the electorate truly wants change, they'll choose someone with an entirely different name, not opt for a dynastic succession.
As an aside: I wouldn't be too quick to annoint John McCain as the presumptive Republican candidate, for a variety of reasons. My prediction: President Mitt Romney.
