Lawmakers Tell CUNY To Move Exams Off Jewish Holiday

Submitted by Fredel Fruhman, Feb 15, 2007 18:03

As someone who pointed this out to CUNY at the end of November, I am dismayed that it has taken this long, and required complaints by legislators, to finally air this topic.

In response to CUNY's promise that students observing Shavuot would be allowed to take the exams on alternate dates:

Having finals taken on one day by the Orthodox students and on the "regular" day by everyone else may lead some (or most) professors to feel the necessity to compose two different finals. Not only is this an unfair imposition on the professors, but also unfair to the students, who would not all be taking the same exams. Especially in any class where the grades might be "curved", the students might not be on a "level playing field" after having taken different exams.

And when would these "alternate dates" be? On other days during that same week, which are already fully allotted to other exams? During one of the last classes, when necessary coursework is still being taught? Or perhaps during the following week, when school is supposed to be over for the semester?
