I'm a former member of this congregation (moved out of NYC in 2001), they are a terrific bunch of folks, some of the kindest, warmest people I've had the privilege of worshipping with. I hope they'll keep the name "Church," that's what they are and what they have been. Unitarian-Universalists welcome all, not just Christians, but Christianity is the root tradition of CCNY and the essentially Protestant nature of the congregation is clear to anyone who spends time with them. This debate is part of their religious work--their spiritual values commit them to reflect their open stance in their name and policies. They'll discuss it and vote democratically on the issue, I support whatever decision they come to but still think "Church" is the more appropirate moniker. Thanks to The Sun for providing this article, I like how they really got a bunch of churchmember voices into a short piece.
