I agree with the author, for the most part. While Madonna and Angelina Jolie may have adopted for good reasons, these international adoptions were also publicity stunts. For the rest of us, international adoptions may be caused by the exhorbitant costs of adoption in the US. I have a good friend who welcomed 2 Chinese girls into her family after being unable to pay the costs for even one American adoption, better yet pass the grueling guidelines when she was already over 60. Now she has 2 thriving daughters who both needed urgent heart surgery and would surely have died if not given the expensive treatment they needed. Of course, children's rights need to be protected and adoptions should be strigently surveyed, but the author paints it as an rosey picture, available to most. The fact is, most of us could not pay for or qualify as adoptive parents, especially if our race is different from that of the child. That needs to change.
