I've been to "The Stadium" twice in my life, and will go there again before its gone. My trips were pilgrimages; you's guys in the "Apple", I think, sometimes don't realize what you've got. Yankee Stadium is hallowed ground. Ruth. Gehrig. McCarthy. Gehrigner. Dimaggio. Scooter. Stengel. Mantle. Ford. Berra. Martin. Guidry. Goose. Jackson. Mattingly. Rivera. Jeter. I could go on, but you get the point--once Yankee Stadium goes down, there will be only two fields left where Ruth & Gehrig ever played--Wrigley & Fenway. Sad, irreplaceable, history succumbs to luxury boxes. Money talks, sentimentality walks. That being said, it is true that the mid 70's rehab turned the greatest palace in the history of sport into an ill-concieved monstrosity that failed on just about every measurable level. I will never forget Norm Cash, doing color commentary on an NBC telecast, sadly lamenting "It's just not the same ballpark." Chris Ippolito had it right; it is not the same ground, and the "ghosts" will not make the trip across the street; its not where they're buried. They'll put up pictures of the ghosts, and a new Monument Park, but it will be a different place, a modern, antisceptic retro attempt to conjure the past that it helped to kill. Why? Because money talks and B.S. walks. They'll do fine; they'll just charge more for the 10,000 fewer seats, and little kids from the Bronx can just watch on TV and dream about going to the new "Stadium".
