The Manchester City coach did not defend Barton before he had seen the replays. When asked to comment after the game he said that he did not feel that he could do so until after he had seen a recording.

When he had seen the replay his remarks were that only the player would ever know if he had injured Mendes intentionally but that in his (Pearce's) opinion he did think that Barton had meant to do it.

The general feeling in England is that the replays are inconclusive but most people are giving Barton the benefit of the doubt as it is felt that he has recently become the victim of something of a witch-hunt.

All of which undermines the general thrust of your story.

As us experts would put it," What a load of bollocks!".
