Daniel, no one is suggesting we shouldn't fight Islamic extremism. What I think the voters were trying to say is that the military aspect of the fight has been overdone. We have neither blood nor treasure enough to occupy the entire Middle East. If you look at the recent successes fighting terrorism (you mentioned one) these arrests have all been the result of good old fashioned police work.
On the international front, Bush's aggressive, preemptive style of diplomacy certainly didn't cause Iran and N.Korea to start their nuclear programs but at best, it failed to stop them and at worst, caused them to accelerate.
