Well, Bush's father pardoned almost everyone who was either indicted or convicted in the Iran/Contra scandal except for those whose convictions were later overturned on appeal (due in large part to technicalities) such as Oliver North. Then there is the fact that Scooter Libby's multimillion dollar defense has been completely bankrolled by influential Republican political donors. So Bush backers are in no way living Scooter out in the cold to fend for himself. If he's convicted, Bush will pull the pardon trigger - and make a complete mockery of his previous threats to fire anyone involved in the outing of Valerie Plame.
