If this is so, does Venezuela still qualify as a 'Democracy' ? Chavez is not simply 'ruining' Venezuela , as Secretary of State Rice recently expressed, he is consciously and systematically suppressing freedom in his country under the ever-so convenient argument of "that's the price to pay for development and social justice, of national progress and dignity, ... etc" Sound familiar ? Veterans of the XX Century's tyrannies should freshen-up the memory of our younger generations, both in Venezuela and abroad, on the cost of apeasement. In the mean time, what are the gentlemen at the OAS waiting for in relation to the mandates of the Democratic Charter of the Americas? Secretary of State Rice was absolutely right in her concern for freedom in Venezuela. But concern by well-meaning friends will not save Venezuela from the nightmare of tyranny it is plunging itself in under the leadership of Mr. Chavez and the little disguised coaching from Cuba.
