That is the simplest explanation for the losses. They were elected by folks with conservative values to go to Washington and instill conservative values. Instead they went to Washington, forgot about the people that put them there, and proceeded to become self-absorbed politicians interested only in trying to line their pockets and those of their friends.
I truly think that if we are forced to rely on republicans and democrats, we are on a course of destruction. Very damn few in either party have the best interests of the nation in their hearts.
