The drug companies can't simply introduce a product as Microsoft does and spend subsequent years patching up the mistakes. Once a drug company obtains a patent, the compound undergoes animal and human trials. The process takes upwards of 15 years. Why doesn't the government extend the patents for an additional 15 years, so that the companies wouldn't have to charge so much to pay for R&D before the compound goes generic?
