Shortstop is a very important defensive position. Since Jeter became a regular in 1996, the Yankees have won 10 division titles in 11 years, and 4 World Series. His reputation may have something to do with that. Absent reliable statistics, as you note, baseball fans might find the idea that a team could be successful, over many years, with a weak defensive shortstop, completely preposterous.
