Rumsfeld Resignation Bodes End of Bush Doctrine

Submitted by K.M. Breay, Nov 10, 2006 10:26

Let us hope that the Gates appointment signals a sea change in American foreign policy, not only for this administration, but also for years to come. I'm astonished that neocons like David Frum, William Kristol and Robert Kagen are STILL participating in public foreign policy debates, lately urging us to attack Iran and issuing ominous predictions about the ramifications of pre-mature US withdrawal in Iraq.

How can someone make so many ridiculous predictions about Iraq (weapons of mass destruction, greeted as liberators, sectarian differences are minimal) that proved to be so patently untrue and then have the gall to make even more predictions about the Middle East, or anything else for that matter?

They sit on leather chairs in the comfort of their air-conditioned AEI offices, writing up 'let's bomb Iran' op-ed pieces while American soldiers are bogged down in a desert far away, dying in a failed war of neocon making. The neocons sit on think tank panels and with manicured hands sip bottled water and with straight faces tell us we should overthrow the governments of Iran, or maybe Syria too. Meanwhile, the realists (Gates, Baker) are working fifteen hour days trying to clean up the deadly mess they created.

Their intellectual solipsism and arrogance and inability to objectively assess their own failings and errors are a mighty painful and dangerous thing to watch. These chicken hawks ought to follow the lead of Paul Wolfowitz, who had the good sense to cut his Iraq losses, limp away from the disaster he created and go run the World Bank.

The only silver lining in this Iraq debacle is that people have wised up and seen the ugly truth about these nefarious traitors. The people have risen up and will toss the neocon agenda onto the raging fire of failed ideologies and schemes, left to burn alongside communism and fascism, and every issue of The Weekly Standard.
