Council Members All Ears as Talk Turns to an Increase in Their Pay

Submitted by Gabriel Falsetta, Nov 10, 2006 12:07

I'm happy to say I was part of the movement in New York to raise the minimum wage. Working people in NY are finding it very difficult to make ends meet. Many are working 60 hrs a week, some work two jobs to make the bills. I must ask a question of the council, how much is enough? $90 thou., $180 thou. We all know the cost of living is high in NY but that's the point. Let's raise the standard of living for those New Yorkers who really need it. $90 thousand is not bad (and there are perks, are there not?). Is it any wonder people are so, so cynical and distrusting of politicians! Please, if you do give yourselves a raise the least you can do is match the average wage increase gotten in the average city contract. 3% per yr on an average salary of 40,000–45,000. I'm all for a 3% raise for you all. Frankly I think very highly of my city council. So, $2,700 seems fair to me. peace and solidarity Gabe Falsetta
