Tom makes some good points but, I would go farther.
Because of the proclivity of the school system and teachers to cheat on test scores, we will not have a true picture of how little or students are learning until we have a national test required of graduating seniors and have it scored by a professional testing firm, whose name will not be known until after reporting the scores, making it harder for education cheaters to tamper with the results.
Teachers and supervisory types have long stood against honest testing, meaningful testing. It would reveal just how deep their failures gone.
Teachers and supervisors must be cut out of the testing program, all the way out by assigning others to the classes on test day and sending the teachers to do remedial instruction.
Make it a felony for a teacher, supervisor or union to divulge the name of the testing firm or any other information surrounding it, to avoid tinkering with the results and outcome by the education lobby.
Send the test report first to government agencies which certify tax money to schools. Then to parents and registered voters who are often cajoled to support some scam of theNational Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, etc.
Until we get serious about finding the true student level of education, attempts to overcome the failure of schools is merely academic.
