Thank you for an insightful and cogent column on the state of GOP politics. I totally agree with you and your perspective. We live in a world of selfish, self centered hedonists whose only purpose seems to be self preservation. And while no one can fault the desire or need to survive, it seems to have become a war of values. The ones who want to survive and benefit others is pitted against those who want to survive at the cost of others. Both think they are right and there is no one wise enough to mediate. So what is the result - we have race against race, gender against gender and rich against poor. No one can say anything without having someone else take issue and want to fight about it. Is this healthy? I don't think so. The tone of the rethoric has escalated to such a din that no one can be heard or cares to listen to another. The result is lies, lies and more lies. Insults, innuendos and of unloving and uncaring behaviors that open us up to world criticism and even attack. My hope is that reason might once again prevail. That common ground can be found and sanity retored. That the values which made America great can once again be found among the vast majority and the vitriolic minority will find fewer forums to spread their venom. It is time for the silent majority (if there is one) to stand up and say enough is enough. It is time for those who are tired of the mudslinging, the name calling, the nuanced facts and biased reporting to take control of the neighborhood. This will start at the top. It will start when those who have a voice will use it appropriately and the listeners will accede. But alas, such a voice seems to be lacking or the listeners are not willing to. And the result is what we have today. If we want America to be respected for what is good - we need to act good, to think good and to be good. My hope is that those who are good will stand up and be counted. That they will put on the mantle of goodness and start living their values in the open. When that happens - America will have a chance. But until that happens, America is as Simon and Grafunkle once sang - "slip sliding away."
