The penalty for being convicted of espionage, whether the damage to national security is negligible or devastating, should invariably be immediate death by hanging. A person, who risks his neighbors' financial or physical well-being for reasons of greed or ideology, has decided to play G-D, but he has not mastered the required omniscience. Such a treason is not merely a crime against the state; it is a felony directed at society as a whole. Mr. Pollard was indeed recruited by an Israeli Operative, if our understanding of the case is true, and that item inclines most men of good will to advocate his immediate release and deportation to Israel. But every espionage case is shrouded in curtains of deception, which may never be penetrated. The danger of a "false-flag" recruiting operation must always be kept in mind.
