A Myth Of Two Cities

Submitted by Domoni Lewa, Mar 3, 2007 21:06

Los Angeles IS like everywhere else in the country mainly because of the fact that all human movement occurs in self-driven private cars, driven principally on freeways, which is, indeed, like everywhere else in the country except New York. It is this automotive aspect that differentiates NYC more than anything else. This differentiator is often summed up with a mention of the term "street life." But that term is a little too flip. The "street life" difference is 1% about "street" and 99% about life. When you ALWAYS have to isolate yourself in your private motor vehicle and invest an usually LARGE amount of time to go anywhere, you are, to my mind, wasting a big chunk of your life in a solitary, isolating, intensely personal activity that is without genuine relationship to the world around you. In NYC by contrast, every inch of movement outside your apartment places you in touch with your community and with other humans (at your option). It is a much more natural, human situation here, "colder" only in the sense of the thermometer. Human-to-human, New York is by far the warmer and more embracing environment.
