I am a member of the NYS Employee Retirement System. Mr. Callaghan was on record with a proposal to begin changing the NYSERS from a defined benefit system to a defined contribution system, with affected members assuming all of the market risk associated with this change. As repulsed as I was by Mr. Hevesi's actions, it was not in my best interest to vote for Mr. Callaghan. I believe that many members of the NYSERS and the Teacher's Retirement System made the same calculation. I, too, hope that Mr. Hevesi does the right thing and resigns. I believe that Mr. Spitzer and our legislature will find another person to be Comptroller who will be highly qualified, and who will uphold the State Retirement Systems.
