Jackie Robinson Remembered as Mets Plan Move

Submitted by matthew flaherty, Nov 14, 2006 14:36

I am very happy to see that the Mets have begun to build a new stadium - as beloved as Shea is to me, it is not the best place to watch a game. Now while I realize the value of having a corporate name attached and associated to a Major League ballpark, I also have grown to appreciate history and tradition.

Jackie Robinson endured more than anyone my generation can even imagine dealing with and gave the gift of diversity to Major League Baseball, the diverse city of New York and the US in general. I would like to see his accomplishments acknowleged by the city that he called home throughout this ordeal, by more than a "rotunda".

I'd like to see the NY Mets and CitiGroup get together to work out a plan that will mimick Oriole Park at Camden Yards - perhaps Jackie Robinson Field at CitiGroup Park? I implore the Mets to take a little less money and CitiGroup to share the spotlight with one of the greatest people to play the game of baseball.
