I took art lessons at the Art Students League regularly for about 10 years (1992 to 2002). Mrs. d'Alessio was my art teacher in her elements of drawing course. The last time I popped in to one of her classes was, I believe, in April of 2005. By this time she no longer taught on Saturdays and no longer taught in the summer time. Mrs. d'Alessio's class was an important part of my life for many years and I am very saddened to hear of her death. (I just found out yesterday-Friday March 9, 2007). She was always very encouraging and communicated to me and others the very simple fact that all of us have an artistic spark that can be nurtured. She said that you really can't make mistakes because the distortions give the picture a feeling that the camera can never capture. As a bonus, I found that her view of art was beneficial to me as a life philsophy. She was a "can do" person who lived a full life and I am very happy to have known her. When I last saw her several years back, she was somewhat hard of hearing but still a very enthusiastic, postive and energetic person. I am of Greek background and there is an old Greek chant in the Greek Orthodox funeral- eon ian tis i mnimi- may her memory be eternal.
