GPS (Global Positioning Systems) are placed into taxicabs so that the nearest available taxi may be dispatched to an address requesting cab service. Yet, NYC cabs are not equipped with two-way radios, a feature critical to any GPS operation. NYC taxis are not dispatched. They pick up fares in public. Some NYC taxi drivers may use cellular phones to take in calls from passengers who contact them individually. The industry's concerns about cabs being monitored and tracked are well-founded. Additionally, the cost of purchasing and installing any device is inevitably passed down from cab owner to cab driver.
