How Tolerant Are We?

Submitted by virgil crespus, Mar 13, 2007 07:01

It's unfortunate that Mitt Romney, who's obviously a man of achievement and excellent capabilities, is being pulverized simply on account of his religious affiliation. So what if he's a Mormon? Consider these... Millions of people worldwide are inspired and motivated by the books of Stephen R. Covey--and yet he's a Mormon. The airline industry was never the same again when David Needleman of JetBlue made flying more accessible to the ordinary folks--and yet he's a Mormon. In the hotel industry, J. Willard Marriott redefined customer satisfaction--and the guy's a Mormon (and this religion, mind you, abhors alcoholic beverages and Sunday business, both of which are staples in that industry).

Now what if these guys, at the onset of their careers, were not allowed by others to do what they wanted to do just because they belonged to some rich, powerful and misunderstood religion with a polygamous, racist past? Think about that. Even if somebody were to say that the presidency of the United States is another matter, well, what really is the difference? And let's put it this way: if the Evangelicals, who put religion at the forefront more than anythng else, are making you scared of a Mormon president, well, what would be the scenario then if you got an active Evangelical president? The thing is, let's not downgrade somebody just because of religion. This isn't what America is all about. It's plain and simple intolerance--or bigotry.
