The previous comments are all intelligent and helpful as is the article, but they all miss the point--the people publicizing Romney's religion don't care about his religion, it's just politics.
The Democrats want to win. The other Republicans want to win. That's just two ways to divide things, and there are plenty of other groups who want their candidate to win, so they look at an opposing candidate who seems to have a chance and they say "What can we bring to the public that will hurt this candidate's chances of winning?" It could be anything. In the case of Romney, they've latched onto his religion. Is it because they think it's weird, they fear it, or because they don't like it? No, it's because they don't have much of anything else to go after.
The liberals think they can drive a wedge between Romney and evangelicals, so they're taking advantage of the opportunity. If it weren't Romney's religion it would be something else. It's not intolerance on the part of the Democrats or the media, it's just an opportunity for them to stir up intolerance amongst Republicans. It's a time-honored strategy known as divide and conquer, and if evangelicals vote for McCain or Giuliani in the primaries, neither of whom has much to offer that is all that different than Hillary nor come anywhere as close as Romney to sharing the core values of evangelicals, then we'll know the liberal media did their job well.
