in response to reader comment: Civil Rights victory for all Americans

Submitted by Ruth Cavanaugh, Mar 14, 2007 10:11

To all the gun people out there, perhaps my reasoned comment was not emphatic enough. It had no misspelled words, no poor grammar, and no exclamation points. All it had was the thought that guns need to be regulated in the modern, populated, dangerous cities. Dangerous not because good citizens have guns, but because criminals find it simple to obtain an illegal gun because they are so available in states with no gun laws whatsoever. I, as a woman of a certain age, living alone, must fear going out after dark because thieves and brigands have guns and are not afraid to use them to rob and murder. Yes, the gun (that is a rifle or shotgun) was needed in pioneer days for protection and for hunting, and the right is given for that reason. However, no one has a "right" to a handgun or multiple shot attack gun. Such a weapon is not needed for the ordinary citizen if criminals don't have them either. Your arguments are proper to protect your right to a hunting rifle or shotgun but do not cover handguns, which are not mentioned at all. I rest my case.
