in response to reader comment: Waiting for the police

Submitted by Ruth Cavanaugh, Mar 14, 2007 13:55

The police are there to see that the law is obeyed. If a man has a gun he shouldn't have, they will arrest him. That is how we are protected. There is not an inherent right to carry a handgun, so don't try to make the 2nd amendment cover your penchant for arming yourself with guns that have no connection with hunting or defense. If you are such a gun freak, live where the guns are allowed to be bought by the criminals, legally or illegally. I choose to live in NY where it is a crime to have an unlicensed weapon. New York is the safest large city in the U.S. WHY? Because of the gun laws that protect the ordinary person from criminals. The streets of New York are safer because of it. If the gun control laws are struck down, there will be rampant murder and mayhem in our inner cities. The 2nd Amendment covers rifles & shotguns, not handguns and attack weapons.
