It's very sad when institutions that have played a significant role in the life of a community for generations lose their vibrancy. All the entwined memories of parish, family, neighbors and friends, memories of love, tug at the heart. It would be wonderful if it could all last forever. But it must not be forgotten that the Church exists to worship God and serve Him, and to serve the people. The true life of a parish is found in worship and the sacraments. St Brigid is no longer viable, and even if the cost of preserving the church is far less than the estimate, the Catholic Bishop of New York must use the all resources at his disposal to provide for the welfare of his flock. Many (not all) of the people concerned with the preservation of the building don't understand that.
